About Damien Demolder

Damien Demolder ProfileDamien Demolder has worked for Amateur Photographer magazine since 1999, becoming Editor over four years ago. During that time he's occupied seats in the features, news and technical departments, interviewing photographers, readers and Japanese camera engineers alike.

A professional photographer before joining the magazine, Damien specialised in commercial and advertising photography, and before that travelled the world as a social photographer on cruise liners.

Whilst editing Amateur Photographer consumes most of his time, whether it be judging competitions, editing weekly pages, testing the gear, meeting readers or championing photographers' rights, Damien still likes to spend his spare time in pursuit of his obsession - taking photos.

These feature in his online gallery and in nationwide exhibitions and talks, incorporating a mix of subjects, styles and camera formats, from ancient to from Four Thirds to full plate.

About David Noton

David Noton ProfileDavid Noton is an award winning landscape and travel photographer with over 24 years experience as a professional under his belt. During his photographic career David has travelled to just about every corner of the Globe, with the exception of Antarctica – which apparently is on the list.

Born in Bedfordshire in 1957, David started exploring the world at a young age, moving to the USA while his Father worked on the American space programme. David subsequently spent what he fondly refers to as ‘life changing years’ in Canada, enjoying a typical Canadian childhood, dominated by hockey, skiing and summers at lakeside cabins.

After receiving a Kodak Instamatic for his 13th birthday, David took his first pictures on a family skiing holiday.

In 1971, when the family returned to England, David attended the prestigious Trent College to fulfil his Father’s desire for David to become a Pillar of the Establishment.

It didn’t quite work out that way, but David did become a fanatically keen member of the Combined Cadet Force – signing up for flying with the RAF, assault courses with the Army and ‘yomping’ with the Royal Marines. During this period David learned map reading, navigation and field skills that he still uses daily.

And so the adventures began...

Judging criteria:

The judges will be looking for two key areas when judging entries. The judging is subjective, of course, but the expert panel will look to be fair. Whilst they’ll be looking for a degree of digital photography competence and reasonable level of quality, by no means do they expect every entry to be a professional shot. Photos will be judged on merit and whether the image truly captures the essence of that country and the ethos of the competition: adventure, travel, emotion and community.

Capturing the spirit of the country:

• Does the photography capture the soul of the country being shown?
• Does it conjure up the culture, people, landscape that are found here…can you almost smell the surroundings, breathe in the balmy rich air or tingle at the rugged cold landscape around you

Composition and impact:

All those elements that work together to create a unique photo that draws you in: focus, lighting, components and creating a real emotional connection with the onlooker.
